Still a work in progress – not just the art, but also this page!

Please visit Tod’s Espresso Cafe in Gunbarrel for an exhibit of my work.

Select note cards are now available at Sturtz & Copeland. I print these in my home studio, so they are “mini-prints.”

Bookmarks are available at The Bookworm on north 28th Street in Boulder .

Art of the Overlooked

I draw natural artifacts that are generally overlooked: weeds, detritus, leftovers. While my art is classed as “botanical,” it is actually more “remindful.” Take a walk. Pay attention to what’s underfoot or at your fingertips. Not just the pretty blossoms, but the other-than-blossom, before-blossom and after-blossom parts of plants.

I always draw from life, in the manner of Audubon. That is, I take a specimen back to my desk, and examine it closely, getting familiar with the grain of the stem and the pattern of veining, as well as the bug-bites, dried edges, and other imperfections. I’m looking at this specimen up-close-and-personal, and about two inches from my nose. Then I draw the image and color it by building up from a base, adding many layers, until I accent the details.

These pieces are done with colored pencils, with accents of colored ink, on Canson 70-pound or Canson Bristol 96-pound acid-free paper.

A Chinese character is added to each image. I’m not sure why. This practice xtarted a few years ago with a large painting of a fern. It felt right, so I continued. Each image represents a feeling or a statement, and I communicate that through my choice of the Chinese character, which becomes the title for the piece.

A word about the backgrounds. On the originals, backgrounds are all white; but scanning and reproducing the image electronically sometimes results in a grey or beige background in order for the image itself to maintain as true-to-original coloring as possible.

These images are copyrighted by the artist and not free for public use.

Originals: Image size is approximately 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches, matted to 10 inches by 12 inches and framed in black (unless otherwise noted).
